About the GIS Analyst
Amanda Williams is the Marine Science Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst for the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation (LOF). Her duties include refining GIS data, creating habitat and aerial survey maps, conducting coral reef photo transect analyses, and assisting in project planning.
Amanda is completing her Master’s Degree in Marine Science with a concentration in Marine Policy at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. In May 2000, she completed her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Geographical Sciences at James Madison University in Virginia. Amanda conducted her Master’s research at Boracay Island, Philippines, investigating land use change with high-resolution satellite imagery and mapping the geographic distribution of coral reefs utilizing SCUBA diving, on-board GPS and video transect collection from 2006 to 2008.
Previous research includes examining Diadema and macroalgae abundance of the coral reef ecosystems in the Turks and Caicos Islands, 2004, and studying sea turtle biology and the relationship to marine protected areas, Baja California Sur, Mexico, 2003. Amanda has worked in environmental education at the elementary, middle and university levels, nationally and volunteering abroad. In 2005, prior to her Master’s research, Amanda worked at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Silver Spring, Maryland, as an Electronic Navigational Charting Associate in the Marine Chart Division, Office of Coast Survey.
