Research, Conservation, and Restoration

Simply said, research, conservation, and restoration activities form the essence of our mission. Recognizing the importance of our living oceans to the future of mankind, the Living Oceans Foundation seeks solutions to the global challenge of preserving and protecting the world’s oceans.

Sound scientific research is a critical prerequisite for any successful conservation or restoration endeavor. The Living Oceans Foundation focuses on coral reef research but other ocean ecosystem research is not outside of our charter and we may engage in other research from time to time. We believe that coral reef ecosystems are of critical importance. Although coral reef ecosystems occupy less than one quarter of one percent of the marine environment, they are home to more than 25% of all known marine fish species. They are often referred to as the rainforests of the marine world because of the abundant species that are critical to coral reef ecosystems (biodiversity) and because coral reef ecosystems are highly productive and extremely important to mankind.
